The law requires class registers to record attendance in detail. In the event of absence due to illness please contact the school office by telephoning 01527 892681 or use our absence notification page on the first day of absence. If your child needs to attend a medical appointment pleases notify the school as above well in advance.
Lateness is also recorded so please ensure that your child is in his/her classroom by 9.00am when the register is called. If the school is not aware of the reason for any absence, this may be recorded as an ‘unauthorised absence’. The school absence rates and target are published every year. The attendance rate for 2015-16 was 95%, which is well above national expectations and averages.
Parents have no automatic right for their child to be absent from school or to have any absence authorised. Failure to send your child to school could result in prosecution.
Parents will be informed of the dates of school terms, half terms and the school closures for staff training.
You may be aware that the Government has made changes to regulations for absence from school. The amendments make clear that headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. Previously the regulations allowed requests for leave to cover family holidays. The new regulations make it clear that family holidays would not normally be considered as an 'exceptional circumstance'. As a result of this change, absence for family holidays has to be recorded as 'unauthorised'.
The school Governors have made a change to our absence policy and will no longer use the extended absence (holiday) request forms. If you do plan any absence in term time you should write to Mrs Yarnold to inform the school of the reasons and any exceptional circumstances outside of family holidays.
The school works in partnership with the area Education Welfare Office and our Pyramid of schools towards a common approach to absence and holiday leave and to ensure that every child attends school whenever possible.
